Despite the triumph of laser and LED printers in the office equipment market, inkjet printers cannot be discounted. Recently, inkjet printers have found more and more diverse applications, from printing on media where laser technology cannot be used, to printing integrated circuits and manufacturing nanotubes. Scientists from the University of Missouri conducted a series of experiments in which they analyzed the possibility of printing drawings – prototypes of biological organs consisting of cells with given properties, on the basis of which real tissues are grown that are compatible with an acceptor organism. The drawings in question are created from a special kind of “ink” ? spherical cell accretions printed on a special biological basis. Printing is performed in several layers, which, after treatment with a solvent, makes it possible to obtain cavities identical to those of real organs.

According to the developers, the next step in the research will be the creation of an artificial organ with its subsequent implantation to test its functioning in a living organism. Since new artificial organs can be created on the basis of the cells of the acceptor organism itself, scientists hope for a lower probability of rejection than if an organ transplant was performed from another living being. The head of a group of scientists developing technologies for printing artificial organs hopes that his approach will make it possible to do without decoding and modifying the genetic code of cells – this is the direction in which most biologists dealing with transplantation problems are now working.
