The global memory market: will manufacturers start a reverse regrouping of capacities?

Last week press reports on plans to cut Infineon Technologies
The release of DDR SDRAM this month led to a sharp jump in the prices of memory chips
– the second week in a row. Although representatives of the German company came out with a denial,
buyers and sellers took messages seriously and 256 Mbit DDR chips
266/333 prices increased by 16 and 17% over the week, respectively, to $ 6.20 and $ 6.40.

Thus, for the first time since December 2021, the price of 256 Mbit chips exceeded
$ 6 mark; in addition, the spot prices of DDR SDRAM exceeded the price of SDR
SDRAM. According to iSuppli analysts, this state of affairs frankly knocked down
confused PC OEMs and spot market players and panic began.
Only DRAM vendors benefitted, however, prices rose too steep
could lead to a decrease in sales in the second half of the year. OEM manufacturers
PCs, in turn, will simply reduce the amount of memory per system, which will lead to
decrease in sales rates.

Despite Infineon’s announcements, analysts are still forecasting a shortage

which will affect the ratio of supply and demand. Producers, so strenuously
allocating power for the release of NAND-flash, can begin the reverse process, trying
get the most out of high DRAM prices. Moreover, given that
prices for DDR SDRAM are higher than prices for SDR SDRAM, it is the last type of memory that will be the least
profitable for manufacturers, they will focus on DDR SDRAM.
