REV 35GB / 90GB: new removable drives from Iomega
Iomega Announces New Iomega REV 35GB / 90GB Drives Combining the Power of a Hard Drive with the Convenience of a Replacement Cartridge.
For the first time, Iomega Removable Rigid Disk (RRD) technology became known back in August last year, when the company announced work in this direction. The drive heads for reading and writing information are protected from dust by a special air filter, which, when installed in the cartridge, eliminates any airborne contamination. In addition, the drive has an automatic internal head cleaning mechanism, which allows achieving high performance when writing and reading data, and a two-stage error correction system ensures information integrity.
The cartridge itself, the dimensions of which roughly correspond to the size of a deck of cards, has a durable case, inside which there is a hard 2.5-inch disk and a low-noise electric motor on hydrodynamic bearings. No axial hole, which is a potential source of dust entering the system. The tightness of the cartridge is ensured both during operation and at rest of the system. Technologies of Texas Instruments (TI), TDK and ExcelStor were involved in the development of the new platform.
Delivery of 35 GB of storage cartridges has begun today (reaching a capacity of up to 90 GB is implied due to additional compression of the archived data). REV discs have dimensions of 10 x 77 x 75 mm, are designed for a million or more rewriting cycles, effectively ensure data integrity due to control over the write speed, while the average data exchange rate is about 25 Mb / s, and the storage life of data on media REV is declared by Iomega at 30 years.
The new Iomega REV media comes with the dedicated Iomega Automatic Backup Pro utility to simplify frequent data backups at the push of a button; at the same time, additional features such as data compression with a ratio of 2.6: 1 and encryption using the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) protocol can be used. New drives are supported by many operating systems including Windows XP / Server 2021/2000.
Iomega REV actuators are available in the following options:
- External design with USB 2 interface.0 MSRP $ 399.99 (includes one media)
- Internal ATAPI, $ 379.99 MSRP (one media included)
REV series drives are also available separately, priced at $ 59.99 each or $ 199.95 for a set of four. Models with FireWire, SCSI and SATA interfaces are expected in the second half of 2021.
