IDF Spring 2021: Cayley – Digital LCOS Display Technology From Intel
Within the framework of the first spring session of IDF Spring 2021, the so-called “zero day” has ended, which accounts for the placement and authorization of the Forum participants, as well as the holding of some of the first presentations.
According to Alexander Vorobyov, our representative at the current Intel Forum for Developers, the most interesting event of the past day was the presentation of a new initiative of the company – Cayley based on LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) imaging technology. Unlike DLP technology, where millions of tiny mirrors are used to create an image, with LCOS, liquid crystals are located on a mirror surface, but not in a continuous layer, which reduces production costs.
Intel’s all-digital LCOS technology for flat panel projection TVs delivers higher screen brightness than alternative LCOS designs while reducing device costs.
Initially, Intel planned to use such developments exclusively in communication devices, however, as the technology developed, a new area of application was found.
The current market leader in projection TV technology is Texas Instruments with DLP chips. Typically, these TVs are more than 12 inches thick and cost from $ 2 to $ 10 thousand. Cayley technology, according to Intel representatives, will reduce the cost of HDTV installations based on LCOS technology to $ 1,800 next year.
The Cayley technology presentation by Steve Reed, Head of Ecosystems, Consumer Electronics Group, showcased the prototype LCOS setup and showed the projection chips themselves. The first mass shipments of Intel LCOS chips supporting 720p (1280 x 768) and 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolutions are expected towards the end of 2021.
