Low-k dielectrics come to notebooks: ATI Mobility Radeon 9700

ATI said the company will use TSMC’s low-k dielectric film technology in its recently announced Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics chips.

Recall that the Mobility Radeon 9700 will be produced at the production facilities of the Taiwanese TSMC according to the standards of 0.11-micron technological processes. Low-k technologies of TSMC are also being implemented in 130nm and 90nm processes of the company. This year, the Taiwanese firm is set to supply over 100,000 300mm low-k wafers, about 10 times more than TSMC last year (10,000).

Low-k dielectrics are traditionally used to reduce the mutual capacitance of electrical conductors within a chip, reducing the time constant of resistive-capacitive networks, contributing to better performance and lower power consumption, which, of course, is important for portable devices. In low-k processes, TSMC uses Black Diamond film made by Applied Materials using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology.

While TSMC claims the Mobility Radeon 9700 is the first low-k dielectric laptop graphics chip, according to the source, a low-k dielectric laptop graphics chip is already being manufactured at UMC factories for Trident, which uses low-k dielectrics. k Coral films from Novellus Systems.

It only remains to add some characteristics of mobile graphics DirectX 9.0 chip ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700. It is already known that the new product will be delivered to the market in three versions – discrete, as well as with integrated 128-bit DDR memory (64 MB or 128 MB).

According to preliminary information, the clock speeds of the Mobility Radeon 9700 will be 390 MHz – 450 MHz, working with a memory chip – 200 MHz – 260 MHz (DDR). Companies such as Acer, Gericom, Alienware, Voodoo PC, Medion, RockDirect, Packard-Bell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Samsung, LG, Targa, Wistron, Clevo, ECS have expressed their desire to produce and supply notebooks with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 to the market. FIC, Quanta, Compal, Uniwill and ASUS.
