The global memory market: a reaction to unnatural price increases
As mentioned yesterday
review of the memory market, apparently, on the stock exchanges, a “response” to an unnaturally fast and strong jump in prices begins: as in yesterday’s evening trading,
and today, in the past morning, the price of DDR SDRAM chips began to decline,
which led to a decrease in the activity of traders.
Moreover, a number of exchanges report an increasing number of players seeking
to sell microcircuits – this is understandable, the unnatural growth of prices makes us assume
their “adjustment” in the direction of decreasing. On the other hand, it is worth noting,
that this week there are only two trading days left – today and tomorrow, and until the end
a total of five “trading” days remain in the month; of course in
the last months are the end of the week effect when prices are on Friday evening auctions
decreased (sometimes artificially) in order to stimulate the activity of traders at the beginning
next week is almost invisible, but it may well appear due to
the approaching end of the month, which, among other things, is also the end of the quarter.
Based on forecasts of memory shortages in the coming quarters and increasing demand from OEMs
PCs currently can be assumed that the minimum price reduction limit
may become their previous level – $ 4.55, $ 4.42 and $ 4.34 for 256
Mbit (32×8) DDR400 / 333/266 microcircuits, respectively, but this is theoretical
at least, in practice, prices may be slightly higher – about 4.6; $ 4.48 and $ 4.48
Currently, the price of tokens has dropped to $ 5.13 / $ 5.23/5.27 (yesterday 256 Mbps
(32×8) Hynix DDR266 / 333/400 chips cost $ 5.20 / $ 5.28 / $ 5.35), although they remained
just above the $ 5 mark. Will manufacturers be able to keep the price above $ 5
marks – it is not clear if it was at the beginning or at least the middle of the month,
there would be a reason for this, but now companies can try to fulfill the set
profit plans, and start dealing with pricing from the new month (and quarter).
The SDR SDRAM sector is quite stable – although prices for microcircuits remain relatively
high (this applies to chips 1Mx16 / 4Mx16 / 2Mx32 / 8Mx16 / 16Mx16), but not reduced
due to existing strong demand and limited supply. Situation
may persist in the near future and is likely to remain so in
April, when the devices presented at CeBIT will begin to enter the market,
using this type of memory.
