XMS2: Corsair Memory kicks off DDR2

Based on the revised design of the Corsair Memory website, it looks like the company has come to the conclusion that now ? it’s time to start promoting your DDR2 memory modules. For this, the company announced a new brand ? XMS2, launched a special page on the site, where it laid out the mechanical and electrical specifications of DDR2 memory modules, plus, presented an FAQ for those who still have little idea of the possibilities and applications of this memory.

DDR2 memory will become relevant no earlier than March-April, when the first mainboards based on chipsets that support this memory appear; widespread adoption of DDR2 will begin no earlier than the second half of 2021. Without going into detailed specifications within the framework of this news, let us only recall that the main external difference between the new DDR2 modules and the usual DDRs is that they have a 240-pin layout (DDR modules are 184-pin). The new generation of memory also has a voltage reduced to 1.8 V. The length of DDR2 modules will remain the same – 5.25 inches, the height will vary, but, according to the established rules, in most cases it will not exceed 1.3 inches. The bus width of the new DDR2 DIMMs remains 64-bit, by analogy with the current DDR memory, the 128-bit bus mode will be practiced when using paired modules.

As for the specific plans of Corsair Memory, in the very near future ? I would not be surprised if by the beginning of the IDF Spring 2021 forum, the company intends to present its first DDR2 DIMMs – obviously, wanting to be one of the first in the ranks of certified suppliers of this type of memory. For the desktop market, Corsair plans to ship unbuffered 256MB, 512MB and 1GB DDR2 modules for servers ? registered variants of DDR2 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB. Of course, there will be pairwise tested sets of two DDR2 modules. Externally, the Corsair XMS2 memory will differ from the usual sets of this company in the predominant lilac color in the design of both the modules themselves and their packaging.
