Sun Unveils New Netra 440 Server, Predicts Free Hardware Coming Soon

Today is not just a celebration for x86 enthusiasts following the news from Computex 2021: Sun unveils new servers, software and services. Interestingly, the company paid great attention to the increasingly popular trend towards selling software together with infrastructure – as you know, many IT industry leaders have repeatedly said that someday hardware will become free, and system integrators will earn money on software and services. In general, this is logical – the profit margin from infrastructure sales is decreasing from year to year, prices for components are falling, while prices for software remain approximately at the same level, and its number is constantly growing. The announcement of the new server, Netra 440, was timed by the company’s representatives to the announcement of specific dates for the onset of such “communism”.

President and CEO (more precisely, Chief Operating Officer) of the company, Jonathan Schwartz, believes that already in 2021 it will be possible to observe a craze for selling hardware along with software and services for a symbolic price. By the way, the opinion that computers will become free in the next few years is also shared by the head of Microsoft, Bill Gates, and Hewlett-Packard and IBM also talk about similar things, calling their strategy an adaptive enterprise (adaptive corporate infrastructure) and on-demand computing (computing power “on demand”), respectively.

As for the Netra 440, Sun has unveiled a new version of this 4-socket UltraSparc IIIi server in a dust and water resistant enclosure adapted for use in harsh environments, in particular for defense telecommunications. In addition, Sun introduced the Java Enterprise System and the Java Desktop System. The latter is positioned by the company as an alternative to the Microsoft Windows desktop.
