VoteHere publishes e-voting software source code

The North American company VoteHere, which develops and implements electronic voting systems, announced an unprecedented step – publishing in the open access on its website the source codes of its software. The company’s management is confident that such a solution will significantly reduce the degree of distrust of voters and computer experts to such technologies, convince them of the safety and reliability of electronic voting systems. In addition to the source codes, the company’s website also contains a simulator of an electronic voting machine, in order to in practice, in real time, allow programmers to watch the step-by-step execution of commands.

No matter what the opponents of e-voting systems may say, e-voting machines are the future, this has long been understood in our country. As you remember, in the last presidential elections on March 14, some elements of the automatic system for collecting and registering votes were already used; however, it has not yet come to the introduction of “electronic voting machines” in our country.

The main fears of experts are that electronic voting systems are not yet sufficiently protected from outside interference and the likelihood of hacking of such systems with the introduction of fraud in the results remains. The last scandal on this topic in the United States took place in July 2021, when a group of scientists from John Hopkins University in Maryland, studying the most popular e-voting technologies already approved for use, discovered serious flaws in the source codes of such E-voting systems. In January 2021, an online voting experiment under the patronage of the Pentagon was also terminated, when a group of scientists issued their disappointing verdict: voting conducted using systems without an Internet connection has a significantly higher degree of security.

In the near future, the United States is expected to introduce a new generation of e-voting systems equipped with wireless interfaces for transmitting the results of electronic voting. Experts also express their concerns about the vulnerability of such systems from third-party interference. Experts hope that VoteHere’s move to publish open source code will force companies in this market to “polish” their software products more thoroughly in the future before their final release.
