SY-P4VAL Version M ? SOYO boards with multimedia BIOS

As ExtremeTech reports with the link
to the official representatives of SOYO, from next week the company will begin deliveries
system boards “instant on” – “enabling users to
constant access to multimedia functions “- in fact, we are talking about,
that owners of systems with such boards will be able to play audio CDs, watch
TV shows (obviously using the tuner built into the system) and watch movies
in DVD format without booting the PC.

The first “wave” of such boards will be the SY-P4VAL Version M boards – based on the chipset
VIA P4M266A for Pentium 4. The most noticeable difference between such boards from standard
– BIOS (judging by the screenshot):

However, according to sources, the boards have a number of limitations: multimedia
content can only be played from optical media, since access
to files stored on the hard drive, requires a PC boot. However, a
feeling that such “inconveniences” are relative: judge for yourself – if
someone needs a “working” computer, it is unlikely that they will be chosen for it
boards with “multimedia” BIOS; on the contrary, if the user is asleep and
sees himself as the owner of a multimedia center (by the way, in English,
it looks like a new phrase is taking root, PCs for the living
room), then you can put up with something.

On the whole, the boards satisfy the requirements for multimedia
center: for example, when you select “watch DVD”, the user is prompted
full set of basic disk management options: fast rewind, jump from
track to track, etc.P. To avoid competition (at least initially
stage), SOYO did not name the company that wrote the BIOS for “instant on” boards.

As for the technical characteristics of new products, they are standard: form factor
– ATX, supports Pentium 4 processors up to 3.06 GHz (533
MHz bus), memory – DDR SDRAM, 6-channel integrated AC?97-compliant
codec, graphics ? S3 Graphics ProSavage8T USB 2 Ports.0… Price SY-P4VAL Version
M will be about $ 70 (abroad), but the set of the board with the tuner will cost
to buyers at 130 dollars.
