Simputer: the affordable PC is finally on sale!

Almost everyone knows that India is a leading country in accepting orders for software outsourcing and one of the leading countries in the world for the production of highly qualified specialists working in all developed countries. However, out of the country’s almost one billion population, about 300 million live below the poverty line, which is caused by frequent droughts and poor harvests, while the main source of state income is agriculture. It is not surprising that the penetration of high technologies into the life of Indians is one of the lowest in the world – only about 9 people out of 1000 own personal computers.

To solve the problem and inject computers into thirsty (and very capable!) Indian masses, Indian scientists from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore came up in 2021 with the idea of ​​creating an inexpensive and affordable pocket PC, which they called Simputer. And now, after three years, scientists have finally succeeded – last Friday, the sale of the Amida Simputer pocket PC officially began. True, the price turned out to be slightly higher than the scientists wanted at the beginning of development ? $ 240 instead of $ 200.

Perhaps, the characteristics of Simputer will seem rather modest – a microprocessor with a clock frequency of 206 MHz, 64 MB of memory, but this is the first PDA for India, developed and produced entirely by its own forces. Simputer is manufactured by Indian government owned Bharat Electronics. A microphone, a loudspeaker are integrated into the basic configuration, the battery capacity is enough for six hours of battery life, this miracle works under Linux OS, it is possible to surf the Internet, send and receive e-mail, support handwriting recognition in Hindi and Kannada.

Enthusiasts of the Simputer project are positioning their brainchild as an inexpensive means of accessing the Internet and hope that with the help of this relatively inexpensive PDA they will be able to make the Internet revolution in India. True, so far their plans are rather modest – to sell at least 50,000 devices in a year, although if the demand for the new product is high, we can expect it to spread to other nearby developing countries.
