Flying Scout Robots: Science Fiction Come True
Last year, we already had a chance (albeit not with our own eyes) to see flying robots from Epson, similar to a small, I would even say, a toy helicopter. The robots being built by Professor Agrawal and his colleagues at the University of Delaware mimic the movements of birds, and although they do it clumsily and only manage to wind circles in the university stadium, they are quite capable of attracting interest from other birds, which for some reason there is a desire to fly with them. It is a pity that the professor has not yet published photographs, perhaps this is a rather vivid spectacle – to see live and mechanical birds flying together.
However, since the professor’s work is aimed at military intelligence applications, it is not surprising that images of prototypes of flying robot birds are not available in open sources. However, some details are still reported. Firstly, it is known that the wings of robots are made of light cork wood and paper (it is possible that one of the readers was fond of aircraft modeling sports and will immediately understand what is at stake) and the weight of the model does not exceed 50 g. Secondly, the wings are set in motion by a light electric motor (the battery, as far as can be judged, is on the ground and the current is supplied through the wires), repeating the movements of the hummingbird.
The second model of Agrawal was made of lightweight and durable carbon fiber and weighed about 14 g. I must say that the flight of the robot itself is already a success, which was achieved by a thorough study of the movements of the hummingbird wing, captured on camera. But this is not enough for scientists – they want complete mimicry with the movement of a bird and in the future they hope to create a radio-controlled flying reconnaissance robot, indistinguishable in a flock from real birds.
