R420 and NV40: retail names and release dates for new chips from ATI and NVIDIA
One of the hottest topics in April is the upcoming announcements of new generations of graphics chips from ATI and NVIDIA. It’s funny to watch how some journalists collect scraps of rumors, conjectures, and sometimes even outright lies all over the Internet, in order to convey to their readers “like the truth” before anyone else. 🙂 I don’t think we should give out half-truths to our readers. In that material, we will try to compile data with a sufficient degree of probability. You could, of course, reprint a bunch of speculation characteristics, coupled with hand-drawn “logos” of new chips, however, it would be more prudent to wait a few days for the end of the NDA and present everything as it is.
So what do we have today. ATI R420 (Radeon X800 AGP) chips with 0.13 micron process technology for the high-end market in the $ 500 price range will debut on April 26 under the Radeon X800 Pro trademark; the official announcement of NVIDIA NV40 (GeForce 6800 is just GeForce, without any FX) is scheduled for April 13 in North America and April 14 in Europe.
Already on May 31, the announcement of the Radeon X800 XT is expected, which so far sounds a bit strange: as you remember, the gap between the release of the Radeon 9800 and 9800 XT was almost six months, and here – only a month. The first versions of cards based on Radeon X800 will be equipped with 256 MB of GDDR3 memory, and closer to the end of the year cards with 512 MB on board, as well as 128 MB DDR1 variants on Radeon X800 SE with “light” clock speeds, will appear.
As for the PCI-Express version R420 – R423, the announcement of the new chip should be expected on June 14. It is very likely that R423-based cards will also be produced under the Radeon X800 brand.
Cards based on RV380 and RV370 chips, the production of which will be established at capacities with 0.11 micron process technology standards, will appear in the second quarter and will receive the corresponding names Radeon X600 and Radeon X300.
