How Kodak fell out with Sony

It is not very pleasant to report on any judicial activities, this news is dreary and unconstructive. However, we still have to talk about some, because they affect the IT industry and in the future may affect the future of a particular company / product.

So another high-profile federal lawsuit, this time ? from Eastman Kodak, filed Monday in District Court. Rochester, New York. The lawsuit alleges that Sony infringed ten Kodak technology patents between 1987 and 2021 by launching various products such as digital cameras and camcorders. According to a Kodak spokesman, the lawsuit was filed after three years of unsuccessful negotiations with Sony representatives for the conclusion of licensing agreements (and, presumably, royalties).

Analysts who have already spoken out on this issue see the patent owner’s move not just as an attack on Sony, but as a possible start for Kodak’s large-scale campaign for licensing fees from many digital camera manufacturers. Indeed, Eastman Kodak currently owns more than a thousand patents related to the production of digital cameras, some of them are directly related to CMOS and CCD sensor technologies, some to the production of digital cameras for cell phones.

Meanwhile, Kodak is already receiving royalties from at least two digital camera manufacturers ? Olympus and Sanyo, who signed licensing agreements with Kodak back in 2021. By the way, Sanyo took this step only after a lawsuit with Kodak, which ended in March 2021 with the victory of the last.

Well, there is nothing surprising in the appearance of such a lawsuit, especially in our time when the digital photography market is growing by leaps and bounds and everyone strives to grab a larger market share than a competitor. However, according to analysts, no matter how this fresh trial ends, it is very doubtful that its very fact will somehow affect the image of Sony in the eyes of buyers of its products.
