New Generation V-DSL Provides Up to 50 Mbps

Discrete multitone technology (DMT) has emerged as the first winner in the dispute over which technology will become the main one in the implementation of the next generation of communication over leased lines (DSL). Anyway, at the last meeting of the working group of the International Telecommunication Union ITU Study Group 1/15 DMT was compared with the technology of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and was recommended for standardization.

The essence of DMT technology is that the used frequency range is divided into 256 channels with a width of 4.3125 kHz. For modulation and demodulation of the signal, the forward and inverse fast Fourier transform (FFT, Fast Furier Transform) is used.

According to ITU Study Group 1/15 recommendations, DMT will be used in V-DSL1 and V-SDL2 technology. Moreover, in specific implementations of V-DSL1, the use of QAM will be retained to ensure compatibility with previous equipment, while in V-SDL2 only DMT will be used.

ITU expects next generations of V-DSL communication standards to achieve throughputs of up to 50 Mbps peak, 23 Mbps average receive, and 4 Mbps send.

Several manufacturers have already expressed support for the use of DMT technology, including Alcatel, Ikanos and STMicroelectronics, the IEEE and T1E1 institutes.4, most likely, the ITU decision will not be disputed.
