ATI and NVIDIA want 60% of the market each

Two of the largest GPU makers have decided thoroughly
heat up the situation on the market – representatives of each of the companies reported that
they are determined to control 60% of the desktop GPU market.

As stated by the chief executive of ATI, which currently controls
about 40% of the global desktop GPU market, for
to achieve this goal, the company will first have to compete for
its market share in China and South Korea. The company representative announced this
at a conference held yesterday in Taipei, where NVIDIA presented a line of fresh
GeForce 6800.

ATI expects that through distributors and OEMs in the region
its market share in China from 30-40% in 2021 should increase this year
up to 60%. Probably, if the previous sales rates at least remain at the current
level, ATI will succeed – the company’s market share in the region in 2021 was
10%. As for South Korea, then the company will have to win back its market
share ceded to NVIDIA in recent years. At the end of 2021, market share
ATI in the region declined to 10% from 90% in 2000. The company has recently been able to
increase market share in desktop GPUs
in Korea up to 40% and by the end of the year plans to almost completely return to the previous
positions – 80-90% of the market.

Describing the capabilities of the GeForce 6800 Ultra and GeForce 6800, Vice President of NVIDIA
on sales in the Asia-Pacific region noted that this year ATI’s plans are not destined to come true. Quoting
Francis Yu, Commercial Times reported that by introducing high-performance
processors of the GeForce 6800 series, NVIDIA will be able to retain its 60% of the processor market
for desktop systems. In support of this position, Yu added that
the company “will continue to increase its market share by introducing
entry-level GeForce 6 models and mainstream solutions.
