DDR2 SDRAM: a DRAM perspective

Once again, analysts have got food for thought on the future of DDR2
SDRAM, we have already published a number of opinions of experts from analytical companies, now
it would be interesting to present the opinion of those who are directly involved in sales
memory – DRAMeXchange analysts who wondered: if the majority
manufacturers have already certified DDR2 SDRAM from Intel, the company most aggressively
promoting this type of memory in the market, but contract prices for DDR SDRAM continue
grow and rumors circulate in the market about possible supply shortages of this type
memory in the second half of the year, will memory really penetrate so deeply into the market
next generation in the foreseeable future?

To begin with, we recall that to speed up the transition to memory use of a new
type and to ensure the guaranteed production volumes of DDR2 SDRAM, Intel has invested
123 million. dollars in Elpida Memory and 450 million. dollars in Micron (with its 12 “factory – last year). DDR2 SDRAM specification provides three types
microcircuits: with clock frequencies of 400.533 and 667 MHz, however, some manufacturers,
along with the release of new generation memory chips, they are intensively releasing 500 MHz
DDR1 SDRAM, and, judging by the forecasts, this memory has prospects in the market
before DDR2 SDRAM becomes mainstream memory. As for Intel, the company
does not approve of such a memory, which is understandable.

As for the high prices of DDR2 SDRAM, many observers agree,
that at the initial stage, memory will be used mainly in servers, however,
considering that Intel has postponed the introduction of the chipset with support for DDR2 SDRAM,
Lindenhurst, from the end of March to June, analysts believe that the market share of memory
the new generation may be smaller than anticipated. Moreover, it is not worth it
forget that Alviso, a DDR2 SDRAM chipset for laptops, will be presented
in September; thus, while the only chipset facilitating penetration
new memory to market, is Grantsdale.

Motherboard manufacturers are also struggling to release solutions,
because we are not sure what proportions should be produced with 240-pin
connectors for DDR2 brackets and 184-pin connectors for DDR1 moreover,
no one can estimate the industry transition time from DDR1 to DDR2. If DDR2 receives
more than 20% of the total DDR SDRAM market, then the second half of this year will be marked
lack of capacity of companies involved in testing new type of memory. Time
testing of DDR2 SDRAM chips is 30% more than the same indicator
for DDR1 SDRAM (400-450 s versus 300-350 s, respectively). In addition, microcircuits
DDR2 are available in FBGA packages, unlike TSOP DDR1, which increases the
cost of systems.

In reality, so far, according to available data, all manufacturers producing DDR2 SDRAM,
suggest that the market share of the new memory type will exceed the 20% threshold: an estimated
Samsung share of this memory will be 20-30% by the end of the year. According to experts,
world production of DDR2 will be 250-300 million. conventional (512 Mbit) microcircuits, and
the company itself will produce about 140-200 million. microcircuits, which will be 50-60%
total output. According to Nanya’s estimates, the share of DDR2 production by the company will be 30%
DRAM release this year, the company’s market share in the DDR2 sector will be 10%;
similar statements were made by representatives of ProMOS.

So everything seems to depend, firstly, on the PC OEMs –
on how quickly they move to the next generation of memory.
Quanta and Compal have already developed laptop models on Alviso for Dell and HP, secondly,
from DDR SDRAM prices – high prices may slow down companies’ transition to DDR2.
