Final specification of IEEE P1625 standard for laptop and PDA batteries adopted

The well-known organization The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has presented the final set of requirements for developers and manufacturers of batteries for portable and pocket PCs. The final version of the standard, called IEEE P1625, is intended, according to the plan of the developers, to finally bring qualification and verification criteria into the most confusing and disordered business of producing rechargeable batteries for laptops.

The draft specifications of the P1625 standard, the development of which started back in 2021, were first published in August last year. The list of companies that worked on the IEEE P1625 specifications gives hope that there will now be some semblance of order in the industry. The list includes Battery-Biz, Compal Electronics, Dell, Dynapack, Fedco Electronics, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Inventec, Motorola, National Semiconductor, Panasonic, Quanta, Samsung, Sanyo, Sony, Solectron, Texas Instruments, and Wistron.

Alas, at present the specification of the standard is not available to the general public, although a general description of it was found. The final version of P1625 describes the requirements for rechargeable batteries for mobile computing systems, including laptops and pocket PCs. The settings of the current version of the standard are limited to the description of lithium-ion and lithium-polymer technologies, although the possibility of adding other options in future versions of the standard is specifically stipulated. IEEE P1625 also describes the electrical and mechanical requirements for batteries; principles of control over the process of charging / discharging segments and sets of batteries; battery status indication; safety issues of production and operation of such batteries.
