Having appeared relatively recently, neural networks have become an unusually popular toy for theorists due to the fact that they are able to solve problems for which traditional approaches are powerless. The task to which it was required to involve neural networks, this time turned out to be from the field of optimizing the forwarding of data packets in wireless networks.
SmartPackets has developed a Smart WiFi algorithm that optimizes the forwarding of data packets on wireless networks to minimize downtime and provide optimal quality when transmitting, for example, digital video. To solve this problem, it is required to take into account that the amount of information sent per unit of time varies greatly, and this requires a change in the packet length. Therefore, an algorithm was proposed that predicts what packet lengths can be used in the near future, based on data on the current network load. This task, as it turned out, is best done by neural networks.
As a result, according to the company, it is possible to achieve a 100% increase in throughput for the selected application. The algorithm is available as a code (about 19 KB) written in C and can be integrated into 802 adapters and access points.11b.
According to the creators of the algorithm, the main advantage of neural networks is that they are nonlinear and allow quite accurately (with an accuracy of the order of 2%), and most importantly, quickly, to determine the optimal packet size.
