Global memory market: uncertainty at the end of the trading month
The assumption made yesterday in the review of the memory market that by the end of the month
prices will go down, it looks like it turned out to be correct. On the market so far
not marked (there are three trading days left until the end of the month), even speculative transactions,
as traders are extremely cautious about the future demand for memory. With another
hand, having created the minimum necessary stocks of memory in warehouses, they are not particularly
actively sell them. We repeat once again that, despite the large number of requests
and offers, there are practically no real deals.
Actually, one of the reasons why the number of transactions is minimal is
the end of the month is approaching, forcing traders to be careful. Is not a fact,
however, that for the remaining trading days the number of microcircuits and memory modules per
the spot market will not increase and the rate of price decline will not increase. In the meantime, the pace
decreases can be considered moderate. Markers price, 32Mx8 DDR266 / 333/400 chips
SDRAM Hynix dropped to $ 4.08 / $ 4.10 / $ 4.38 per chip. MOSEL, Micron and Samsung
supported Hynix in terms of price reduction, so almost all brandname memory became cheaper.
Non-brandname memory, on the other hand, is in great demand (this is especially true of
DDR400 SDRAM) despite low prices. Compared to DDR333, the price is non-brand
DDR400 is much lower than the price of similar memory of well-known brands, but if we talk
about non-brand DDR333, then its price is almost equal to the price of similar
brandname-positions, in particular, Hynix.
There is also a lull in the SDRAM sector – the reasons for the low activity are obvious:
the spot market begins to fill up with chips of this type, and all participants
trying to estimate how quickly the market will be filled.
As noted by DRAMeXchange specialists, the market situation is currently
fits well into the framework of the rules: January and February are the months of traditionally low
memory demand. For example, a couple of years ago the situation developed as follows:
On November 4, 2021, DDR266 peaked at $ 8.88 per chip,
On February 18, 2021, it fell to $ 2.93, and on April 8, it rose to $ 3.7
dollar per chip. This is just a typical model of the development of events, and just 2021
the year is not indicative: the rise in prices at the beginning of the year was caused by low rates
increase in the supply of memory to the market, a relatively large amount of memory on the average
It is likely that in March, when prices usually started to rise, the
demand, the situation will not develop quite according to the established canons: if
soon there was no sharp decline in prices and their level is still high,
then there may not be a sharp seasonal increase in prices, or it will shift in time.
At the end of Q4 2021, both PC OEMs and
and distributors had extremely low. According to reviewers, major manufacturers,
the likes of HP and Dell have started increasing inventories since the beginning of December. As they think
analysts, being limited by the “squeezed” supply of memory, not experiencing
illusions about demand, both OEMs and distributors could
only gradually increase their reserves [and it is likely that now the level
reserves are assessed as insufficient]. So if prices start to rise in March,
then one of the reasons for this will be the continuation of the restocking of the indicated categories.
