64/32-bit x86 processors with Intel CT support – at IDF Spring 2021?

Reports of varying degrees of credibility about Intel’s development of a 32- / 64-bit chip based on x86 architecture seem to have reached a climax, moving from the columns of yellowish publications to the pages of serious publications, moreover, turning from ordinary rumors into the opinion of eminent analysts.

Thus, yesterday’s issue of EE Times cites the opinion of Nathan Brookwood, a specialist from the analytical company Insight64, who is confident that the first 32- / 64-bit x86 processors from Intel will be presented on February 17-19, during the first spring session of the Intel Forum for developers. Presumably, the new technology will be presented under the working title CT.

Experts differ on the hardware base for the new 64-bit technology. Some analysts believe that Intel’s new 32- / 64-bit x86 chip will be based on server developments of the Xeon line, for example, Prestonia or Gallatin cores (in the future – Nocona). The aforementioned Nathan Brookwood believes that CT (formerly Yamhill) technology is based on the Tejas core, which follows Intel’s plans for the recently introduced Prescott. In his opinion, support for 64-bit extensions is already incorporated by Intel in the Prescott core, however, for the time being, it is simply disabled. Brookwood is adamant about ideas about compatibility of Intel CT technology with 64-bit AMD64: there is no question of it.

Rumors and considerations about various technological extensions hidden for the time being in the bowels of the Prescott core have been stirring up the Web for a long time. Indeed, it is impossible to get off the ground with the previously declared LaGrande and Vanderpool in the new generation kernels. However, the announcement of Intel CT, if any, will make, in my opinion, much more noise. Despite the fact that the arrival of processors with support for CT technology will take place no earlier than 2021, such an announcement could significantly affect sales of systems with Itanium 2 and Opteron processors right now.
