Taiwanese rumors about AMD Athlon XP Paris and Intel Jonah
According to sources among Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, AMD may be planning to introduce a 32-bit processor based on the K8 microarchitecture, codenamed Athlon XP Paris. If you believe these rumors, the new microprocessor is aimed at the low-cost desktop market, will have 754 pins and a full-fledged K8 microarchitecture, 256 KB of L2 cache, but will not support 64-bit AMD64 (x86-64) extensions.
Along with the release of the Athlon XP Paris, AMD will begin phasing out the release of the Athlon XP Socket A / 462. According to the source, Athlon XP Paris will have the same layout as Athlon 64, so motherboard manufacturers will be able to use the same chipsets or mainboards currently sold for 64-bit processors. And while many resellers are likely to be happy to fill the low-end niche with new AMD processors, Paris’ compatibility with Athlon 64 will probably not please motherboard manufacturers, as this step could be followed by price cuts for K8 chipsets. Unless, of course, new chipsets designed specifically for Athlon XP Paris immediately appear on the market, which is unlikely, especially considering the passion of many Taiwanese (and not only) craftsmen to find ways to activate the hidden capabilities of processors and chipsets, forcing them to work in non-standard modes – the compatibility of the layout of 64-bit and 32-bit processors on the same core will certainly serve as a reason for a number of studies;).
In particular, VIA, which is a leading supplier of chipsets for K8, has already announced its decision not to develop chipsets exclusively for Athlon XP Paris. All other guesses can still be attributed only to the category of conjectures – there is no official information from AMD yet.
According to the same sources among Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, new processors for notebooks of AMD’s main competitor, Intel, based on the Jonah core, will appear no earlier than the second half of 2021 and the first half of 2021. Sources believe Jonah will be a symbol of bringing together the various Pentium 4 processor families (laptop and desktop) into one line. This conclusion was made on the basis that although the Jonah core will be a continuation of the Pentium M line, thanks to the 65nm technical process, the new processor will have a number of functions of the current desktop Pentium 4 / Prescott. Well, this is a rather curious assumption, but how much it corresponds to the truth, it will probably not be said soon.
