Intel fuel cells: 8 hours continuous operation by 2021

It looks like the fashion for portable fuel cell technology came from Japan across the ocean – at IDF Intel unveiled the concept of a hybrid fuel cell that should have enough capacity to power a laptop for at least eight hours. The 12 W cell fits into the optical drive bay and has a 160 ml volume and uses a 100 ml cartridge. Intel is going to present the Swap Bay “fuel” concept at the Smart Battery System Implementers Forum for endorsement or possible standardization.

This is how the company envisions the future of laptop power technology:

Since one cell provides approximately 0.4V, the fuel cells mentioned by the Intel speaker are stacked 12-15 to provide the required voltage level. And this, incidentally, is one of the important obstacles still standing in the way of the commercial introduction of fuel cells.

Another problem, according to the company, is, firstly, the long transition time to operating mode and the inability to withstand the “peaks” of the load, typical for laptops. For example, with an average power consumption level of 10-12 W, consumption peaks up to 30-50 W are possible. To solve this problem, it is proposed to use a small battery or a large-capacity capacitor, which is reflected in the name of the fuel cell – “hybrid” (by the way, this means an increase in the weight and size of devices, which is undesirable).

According to Intel, new types of lithium polymer batteries will appear no earlier than 2021, and their energy density will not increase by more than 5-10% per year. That is, if now the most capacious batteries provide 550 Wh / L, then by 2021 their capacity will reach 800 Wh / L, and still this will not be enough to ensure 8 hours of continuous operation. The use of two rechargeable batteries in one laptop is undesirable, since in addition to increasing weight, it also leads to an increase in charging time. Among the possible alternatives, batteries based on silver and zinc, lithium and cobalt oxide (lithium cobalt oxide) are named, but it is still difficult to say when they can actually be used.

In conclusion, we add that the current estimates of the introduction of hybrid fuel cells by 2021 look quite realistic. Previously, Intel expected to see them already in 2021, but today, although it is still far from implementation, at least there is already a fairly good concept on the basis of which one can try to do something.
