MPCore: ARM multi-core microprocessor architecture

By all appearances, the fashion for multi-core processors has reached embedded architectures: ARM, which recently announced the entry of digital signal processors (DSP) into the market, presented a reference design of the MPCore processor architecture, containing from one to four processor cores and supporting SMP ( symmetric multiprocessing).

MPCore is based on ARMv6 with SIMD extensions and, according to the company, is capable of delivering 2600 Dhrystone MIPS (Million. instructions per second). MPCore uses Adaptive Shutdown and ARM Intelligent Energy Manager technologies to reduce power consumption by 85% (presumably compared to ARMv6). MPCore can work either in SMP mode with shared cache and AMP (Asymmetric MultiProcessing), or in any combination of the two modes.

NEC has already announced its intention to use MPCore in its microprocessors.
