Toshiba on IDIS: QVGA OLED display for cell and display camera

We are somehow accustomed to the fact that mainly Korean Samsung and Japanese Sharp are competing for leadership in the technological race in the market of displays for mobile phones. Another Japanese manufacturer, Toshiba, decided to remind of itself with the announcement of OLED display (Organic Light Emitting Diode), which supports QVGA (240 x 320) resolution and has a diagonal of 3.46 inches. This, of course, is not a record (so far the Samsung display remains the record holder, providing a resolution of 640×480 with a diagonal of 2.5 inches), but for an organic display it’s not even bad. By the way, not so long ago, another Japanese company, Epson, demonstrated the possibility of using OLED technologies to create displays with a diagonal of 40 inches.

Toshiba’s new display is said to have a fairly long lifespan (which has hampered the ubiquity of OLED displays for a long time), has increased brightness and contrast, and a reduced cost. The company presented its novelty at the International Exhibition Information Display International Symposium (IDIS).

Another product of the company, a QVGA-display, which Toshiba called “system on glass”, is not only capable of displaying information, but also works as an image sensor with exactly the same resolution – 320×240. This display camera is based on TFT (thin film translucent transistor) technology.
