Global memory market: fever has subsided, but prices are rising

Judging by the results of today’s morning trading on the exchanges, the frenzy of the market
stopped: the price of memory modules remained at yesterday’s level, 256 Mbit (32×8)
DDR400 SDRAM chips from major manufacturers dropped to 6.66 on average
dollar apiece (from $ 6.70 yesterday). The price of markers, 256 Mbit (32×8) microcircuits
DDR333 / 400 Hynix yesterday evening rose to $ 6.58 / $ 6.55 respectively and so far
is at this level.

As the exchanges note, the number of transactions with SDR SDRAM chips has decreased, which
due to the high activity of traders in the DDR SDRAM sector, therefore the price of 512
MB of brandname SDR SDRAM modules is around $ 90.5- $ 96 depending
from the exchange, OEM modules of the same capacity – 79-86 dollars, 256 MB modules – 43-48
dollars and 39.5-42.5 – for brandname and OEM, respectively.

Naming famous
the reasons for the jump in prices, DRAMeXchange analysts believe that some of the prisoners are for
the last two days of trades have been speculative. Moreover, the situation has worsened
and the fact that memory suppliers once again reduced the supply of products to the market
and reserved only a part of microcircuits and modules – “only for the most reliable
partners “. DRAM buyers as a result of such supplier policy in the first place,
could not have time to make stocks of memory at affordable prices, and, secondly,
if, when it was impossible to purchase memory on the spot market, buyers contacted
to manufacturers who openly played and offered low prices, it turned out,
that either the goods have already left, or are in stock, but at again raised prices – and such
the situation has been going on since the beginning of April.

Considering that the average cost of 256 Mbit (32×8) DDR333 SDRAM chips in
March was $ 4.95, then the purchase price of microcircuits for manufacturers
modules exceeded $ 5, that is, in supply chains and module builders
at the moment there are only weekly stocks. As of yesterday
day the price of untested chips climbed to $ 6.30 per chip,
therefore, this memory has become the most interesting product for buyers – because of
stable supplies to the market (as opposed to brandname-memory). Over the past two
weeks as a result, the price of untested microcircuits almost equaled
microcircuits of major brands – despite the fact that usually the difference in price is
20-30 cents.

All indications are that the supply of brandname memory to the market will not increase,
and in the second half of April contract prices will be raised again – a maintenance measure
high level of spot prices. We have already noted that pricing as on a spot,
and in the contract markets in the second half of the month will depend on whether,
will PC OEMs stop buying memory when the price of a module exceeds
38 dollars. DRAMeXchange reports citing VP of Worldwide Sales
and marketing by Nanya Technologies, that there are signs of a decrease in demand for modules
on the part of PC assemblers, no, moreover, the mentioned company, with all the desire
cannot allocate enough capacity to meet current demand
Dell, IBM, HP, Acer, Apple and Gateway. Similar messages come from others
memory manufacturers, so that preliminarily in the second half of April contract
prices may exceed $ 40-42.

Returning to yesterday’s discussion of the required levels of reserves, I would like
back them up with numbers from stock exchanges. DRAM purchasing departments in various companies in this
year should take into account not only the seasonality of demand, but also (more importantly in light of
recent events) – price trends. As we mentioned many times before,
the cost of memory modules in an OEM system must be within 5-10% of the cost
the system itself (without a monitor). Since over the past couple of years, the cost of microcircuits
memory decreased by about 30% over the year, the cost of memory modules was
about 4-6% of the cost of systems.

According to market research department DRAMeXchange, currently 512 MB
RAM is installed in approximately 57% of desktops and 50% of laptops. With rising prices
on computer manufacturers, these indicators will decrease – by about
30% for both desktops and laptops. Consumption will decrease accordingly
chips: 256 Mbit (32×8) for desktop systems – 13%, 256 Mbit (16×16)
and 512 Mbit (32×16) for laptops – by 10%. So, if usually the stocks of memory
for OEMs – for 10-14 days of sales in 1-2 quarters, then in 3-4 quarters
they increase to 5-6 weeks. So if OEMs start
increase stocks for another 2 weeks within three months, then every month demand
on memory chips will increase by 16%, that is, prices will continue to rise.
