An unusual application of microelectronics: to decipher the structure of DNA
Despite the fact that every day it becomes known about new tremendous advances in science and technology, the newly received reports of unusual applications of electronic technology do not cease to cause surprise and interest. This time, scientists from the French College Ecole Normale Superieure (in Paris) decided to surprise the world, who reported on the development of a method for decoding the genetic code of DNA using a microelectronic integrated circuit. In the experiment, the researchers used an array of silicon field-effect transistors that change their conductivity depending on the charge of the nearby parts of the deoxyribonucleic acid molecule, which, in turn, makes it possible to judge the configuration of the molecule. Scientists have used their approach to study human DNA mutations, and hope that their experience will be used in the creation of lab-on-a-chip.
In the experiment, scientists used a matrix consisting of 100 field-effect transistors (FETs) located at a distance of about 10 nm from each other. DNA molecules in an aqueous solution have a negative charge and create a negative potential difference at the gate of nearby transistors. By measuring the amount of current flowing through different transistors and using fairly trivial mathematical algorithms, one can estimate the configuration of molecules.
As reported in an article published in Applied Physics Letters A, the scientists were able to demonstrate sufficient sensitivity to identify the 35delG genetic mutation, which is the cause of hereditary deafness.
