90nm 3.4-GHz Prescott postponed until April

Intel Shifts Official Release of 90nm 3.4GHz Pentium 4 Processor Based on Prescott Core to April, Taiwanese Vendors Report. Previously, the release of a 3.4-GHz processor on a new core was expected in mid-March and the delay is associated with an insufficient percentage of production of suitable chips on 90-nm production lines.

Recall that from the summary table of Pentium 4 processors literally last week it became known about the existence of Prescott with a clock frequency of 2.4A GHz, while not so long ago it was stated that the frequency of 2.8 GHz announced in early February is the minimum for the new core.

One way or another, the resellers were not too upset with the delay, rightly judging that the respite would be good for them and would help them sell stocks of Pentium 4 processors based on the previous version of the core (0.13 micron technological processes) and Socket 478. It should be noted that, possibly, 3.4 GHz Prescott will also be released with the Socket 775 interface, while all Prescott announced so far can still be used with motherboards for the “good old” Socket 478.
