There will be no Windows 98 / Me drivers for Grantsdale / Alderwood
Progress is moving inexorably forward and owners of old systems (or old software).
It looks like they’re beginning to reap the benefits. As reported by Digitimes
citing sources among Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, future
Intel chipsets, 915 (Grantsdale) and 925 (Alderwood), which are planned to be released
in June, will not have drivers for Microsoft Windows 98 operating systems
or Windows ME, only for more modern solutions – Windows 2000 and Windows
This Intel strategy will force users to switch to new operating systems
– of course, if they want to equip the system with a board based on one of these chipsets.
Although both Windows 98 and Windows ME are “compatible” with the new core logic chipsets, the lack of drivers is explained by
the fact that none of the operating systems will work on them “with the required efficiency”.
However, Intel’s chipset strategy leaves a niche open to others
players such as VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems
(SiS), which may release their own chipsets that officially support
Windows 98 and Windows ME. So those who wish, however, can wait: neither VIA,
neither SIS will be able to market their new chipsets until the third quarter.
