NVIDIA NV40 and ATI R420: small business, a matter of weeks…
We, as a publication, quite sedate and with a claim to be academic, would like to continue to stay out of rumors and all sorts of fabrications about what is still only in the plans, about things that did not appear in the official announcements. Alas, without such details, the news feed threatens to become dry and minimally informative, which does not quite correspond to our main goal: to provide information in a timely manner. In total, once again you will have to “dig deeper” in the rumors, although this time you can assure that they are more or less true and will be confirmed later.
So, about NVIDIA NV40, which is imposing on everyone’s teeth, because sooner or later its coming will take place, and not talking about it would be, at least, shortsighted. Confrontation between two future monsters – ATI R420 and NVIDIA NV40, on everyone’s lips. Who spent the last autumn and winter more fruitfully will become clear not earlier than CeBIT 2021 (or maybe later). We have a month to gossip a little about this topic.
So, the fresh data: under the heading NVIDIA NV40 specifications confirmed, this morning the well-known English source The Inquirer, with the filing, as stated, of “informed sources from the United States”, publishes fresh details about the chip, which, it seems, is not going through its first youth ( in the sense of stepping) before its first announcement. Omitting the “scary” secret details that appeared in our previous publications on this topic (fortunately, they are outdated), I convey what became known tonight:
- NV40 will have a full-sized 16-pipe engine (previously announced 8×2 organization)
- It’s scary to think, but this time it’s about 205 ? 210 million. transistors (earlier rumors reported fabrications of 175 million.)
We in no way intend to express skepticism about the stated, let, as they say, these words in the ears. Interestingly, the representatives of the opposing side also do not intend to lag behind: according to Richard Huddy, ATI’s European Developer Relations Manager, their ATI R420 based on 175 million. transistors, it will still be “faster, more balanced”, and will also be accompanied by “10 additional (compared to NV40) toys”.
The point, of course, is not the number of transistors in each chip. Presumably, it will surprise anyone if, by the beginning of the March CeBIT 2021 exhibition, both rivals come to the “finish line” with different potential; most likely, we will see two approximately equal products with different implementations, but, as usual, with different marketing presentation, something like “who shouts who over whom”.
It is poorly [yet] believed that someone will be able to outplay an opponent in architecture. By the way, do not forget that binding (or not binding, depending on market demand) to a new bus (PCI Express 16x), and the subsequent need for these revolutionary innovations can easily multiply the best intentions by zero. NVIDIA’s latest statement is undoubtedly shocking, but in the end, only tests and expert opinions will convey the whole truth. It is better for me to shut up here, because where the market will bring this year, to say with a certain degree of certainty, more respected analysts do not undertake yet. 🙂
However, one way or another, but the most sold will remain the simpler solutions of both companies. Let me remind you that the current architecture has a whole list of inexpensive clones that most buyers are interested in. Be that as it may, while the technical process will remain at 0.13 microns, hardware support will remain no higher than DirectX 9.0, Shader 3.0, the memory will be supported by the new, but already well-known from our news: DDR1, GDDR2 and GDDR3. Forgive me, gentlemen, skeptics :), but for now, I believe that in the first incarnations we will still talk not about PCI Express 16x, but about the AGP 8X interface, about clock frequencies of 500 – 600 MHz for the chip, 600 – 800 MHz for memory.
