About domestic microprocessors: MCST R500 ? not Elbrus E2K, but 500 MHz is already there
Many copies were broken by the debaters in our conference on the future of our domestic microelectronics, and in particular, the prospects for the development of domestic microprocessors. Moscow Center of Sparc Technology, that is, the Moscow center of Sparc-technologies) under the leadership of B.BUT.Babayan’s development of processors is in any case not intended for the consumer market, disputes about the specifics of the architecture of processors, and, most importantly, about the reality of the prospects for the appearance of such chips have not subsided for many years.
Recall that according to the data published in May 2021, Elbrus MCST CJSC planned (according to the project manager Boris Babayan) to receive a prototype of the Elbrus processor of its own design with a wide command word architecture based on explicit parallelism by the end of 2021. The Elbrus processor, according to the plan, was supposed to have a clock frequency of 400 MHz using the 0.18 micron process technology. Its successor, E2K, was supposed to reach frequencies of 1.2 GHz by 2021, and using a 0.10 micron process technology could reach clock frequencies of the order of 3 GHz and show performance of 500 and 1200 on the SPECint95 and SPECfp95 benchmarks, respectively. Building on the original Sparc (Sun Microsystems) processor architecture, Elbrus MCST has developed its own instruction set with binary compilation technology similar to the code-morphing technology used by Transmeta in its Crusoe chips. According to Babayan, the processor can perform up to 24 operations per clock cycle.
Time passes, and, unfortunately, nothing definite has been heard about this project. The main problem of the project was and remains insufficient funding. There are a number of potential Western partners who are not averse to investing in the project, however, for this, as usual, a working prototype of the chip would not hurt, the creation of which, again, requires considerable funds. In a word, there is not much to talk about yet.
However, not everything is so bad. In addition, ZAO Elbrus MCST is developing a family of SPARC-compatible processors of the MCST-R series in parallel, and here the company’s success is much more noticeable. Recently, a message appeared on the project website about the completion of the development and production of prototypes of the first domestic universal processor “MCST R-500”, operating at a frequency of 450 MHz ? 500 MHz with less than 2 W power consumption.
At the moment, the following details are known about the chip:

- Topology – 0.13 microns, 8 plating layers

- Power dissipation – less than 2.0W
- Package: 420-pin BGA

It is also reported that the samples are fully operational, their capabilities have been tested as part of the Elbrus 90-micro computer complex under the control of the Solaris and Linux operating systems and on a large complex of applied tasks (now such complexes work with 150 MHz MCST-R150 processors based on 0.35 mm process technology). Supposedly, deliveries of Elbrus 90-micro complexes based on MCST R-500 processors will begin in the second half of 2021. Complexes “Elbrus 90-micro” operate under the control of OS Solaris, Linux and MS VS, have various types of execution: for use in relocatable control systems and information processing, in desktop version, in the form of AWP based on a simplified system unit, in a stationary version, in the cPCI construct.
In other words, an industrial processor for a wide range of applications. Despite its specific focus and, in general, a more or less understandable architecture, it would be interesting to know, for example, the name of the OEM-manufacturer of such processors, as well as to look at the chip “live”. Let’s hope that closer to the appearance of serial batches of the processor, there will be more information about it.
