Embedded Processor Forum: VIA Reveals Esther Details

At the Embedded Processor Forum taking place these days, VIA revealed to the public some details of its C5J microprocessors (codenamed Esther), about which there were many rumors, while there was almost no real information at all, except that Esther will be produced in 300 -mm IBM plant in East Fishkill, NY, at 90nm standards, and will use SOI (silicon-on-insulator) technology.

According to VIA, the Esther will have significantly higher performance than the Eden, consuming only about 3.5 watts at 1 GHz. Esther will operate at a Front Side Bus (FSB) up to 800 MHz, the clock frequency, as previously announced, will be from 2 GHz, the L2 cache will be increased, SSE2 / SSE3 extensions will be added. Since Esther (more precisely, the C5J processor core) is positioned in a rather specific market niche, for better operation of e-commerce applications, hardware support for RSA and SHA-1 / SHA-256 (Secure Hashing) cryptographic algorithms has been added.

In addition, C5J expands support for VIA PadLock Hardware Security Suite and, importantly, adds Execution NX protection technology, which will be supported in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
