WiMedia adopts MBOA specifications without waiting for IEEE

As it became known late last week, the WiMedia Alliance adopted the MBOA (Multiband-OFDM Alliance) specifications for the ultra-wideband (UWB) standard to use as a basis for future personal-area networking (PAN) platforms.

In general, there is nothing surprising in the fact that WiMedia adopted this particular version of UWB – two months ago, Intel and Texas Instruments, which support MBOA-UWB, entered the alliance, taking leading roles. Of the remaining 9 members of the alliance, another 7 also support MBOA-UWB.

Well, now it seems that the adoption of the alternative DS-UWB standard, promoted by Motorola (also part of WiMedia), becomes even less likely, although until the next meeting of the IEEE 802 working group.fifteen.3a about a month left. Prior to Intel and Texas Instruments joining the alliance, WiMedia planned to await the de jure adoption of the final specifications from the IEEE 802 working group.fifteen.3a.

Let’s briefly recap the differences between DS-UWB and MBOA-UWB. In the first case, the licensed frequency range is proposed to be used in its entirety, which makes it possible to achieve a bandwidth of 1 Gbit / s, but at distances of up to 3 m. In the second case, it is proposed to split the range from 3 to 10 GHz into sub-bands with a width of 528 MHz, which makes it possible to reduce signal distortions and increase the distance to 10 m, but at the expense of bandwidth – 110 Mbit / s at 10 m and 480 Mbit / s at 3 m (for more details see. here).
