Athlon 64 2700+: AMD’s first mobile chip with Newcastle core
The most preliminary data on AMD’s plans says that in April the company will be ready to start shipping the new Athlon 64 2700+ mobile processor with lower power consumption. Among other unique characteristics of the chip, it should also be noted that the new Mobile Athlon 64 will be the first processor for portable PCs based on the Newcastle core, that is, with 512 KB of L2 cache.
Recall: among other chips for the needs of laptop manufacturers, AMD currently supplies a line of Athlon 64 2800+, 3000+ and 3200+ mobile processors, which require 1.4 V to power the core and fit into a TDP of 62 W. In addition, Athlon 64 DTR (Desktop Replacement) chips are also available with ratings 3000+, 3200+ and 3400+, operating at 1.5V core voltage and having a TDP of 81.5W.
All of the above chips have 1 MB L2 cache and are manufactured in compliance with the 0.13 micron process technology. In contrast, the new Mobile Athlon 64 2700+ Newcastle with a real clock speed of 1.6 GHz (like a model with a 2800+ rating) has 512 KB L2 cache, a core voltage of 1.2 V; its TDP is positioned as 35W.
Unlike Mobile Athlon 64 2800+, 3000+ and 3200+ Mobile Chips with PowerNow Technology!, switching in the power saving mode to a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a core power of 0.95 V with a total TDP of this mode of about 13 W, Mobile Athlon 64 2700+ processors when PowerNow is turned on! and the same clock frequency are powered by 0.90 V, while the TDP is reduced to 12 W.
