Altera is positioning CPLDs as an alternative to FPGAs
By the end of this year, new samples of CPLD (complex programmable logic device), developed by the North American company Altera, will appear on the programmable logic microcircuits market. The company hopes that the CPLDs, presented at the moment by the MAX II family, will compete with FPGA (Field Programmable Grid Array).
CPLDs MAX II were presented in March this year, trial samples are expected on the market from August. MAX II targeting consumer electronics, telecommunications and mobile markets.
MAX II chips are expected to be manufactured at TSMC at 0.18-micron standards, will be built on a macrocell architecture (from 192 to 1700 macrocells on a single chip) and will be equipped with integrated flash memory.
