Serial ATA II: Official Edition. Specifications for new types of cables and connectors
Serial ATA Working Group launched the official Serial ATA II or Serial ATA 300 at Intel’s Spring Developer Forum session in Barcelona, Spain. In addition, specifications for new cable and connector types were introduced for the first time to support new applications and usage patterns for the SATA interface.
Serial ATA II interface specification, currently under approval, allows data transfer rates up to 3 Gb / s (300 Mb / s), twice the data transfer rate of the 1st generation interface.
New Serial ATA II based products have already been announced, approximately one month after the final specification approval, the corresponding products will be on the market. New technology does not require replacement of connectors and cables to support higher data transfer rates.
In addition to doubling the physical layer data rate specified in the SATA 1 specification.0, the new specification also defines a higher power version for use in computer centers. This external physical layer specification refers only to communication between storage systems and is not used for direct disk attachment, and the electrical parameters it defines correspond to the physical layer parameters of the SAS.
Also at the IDF forum, it was announced the completion of the development and the expected soon approval of the specification defining new types of cables and connectors. The second cable and connector specification includes several new connection types:
- Internal multichannel cables and connectors to speed up connections between internal host ports and internal devices on the backplane
- External cables and connectors that allow the Serial ATA interface to connect to external storage systems
- External multichannel cables and connectors for computer centers designed to connect multiple Serial ATA channels to system units
Products that will use new cables and connectors will be available by the end of the year.
The Serial ATA Working Group currently includes the Serial ATA subgroups 1.0 Working Group and Serial ATA II Working Group, in which 153 companies participate, including Dell, Intel, Maxtor, Seagate, Vitesse and others.
