Wi-Fi in the TV range ? FCC proposal

The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed
to use for a number of services in wireless communication networks a part of free TV broadcasting
ranges. In fact, the proposed use of “holes” in the ranges
currently used to protect channels from interference; despite
to objections from broadcasters, the FCC defends its point
view, arguing that new services (we are talking about high-speed
Internet access) alone cannot cause any problems.

The main reason that prompted the FCC to come up with such a proposal is
the commission’s commitment to provide broadband internet access services in
remote areas. As of today, the proposal can be supported by a number of
IT companies, in particular, Intel, whose CTO noted that the allocation
range will contribute to the accelerated spread of technology [Wi-Fi
networks] on the one hand and will enable equipment manufacturers to offer
new technical solutions on the other.

It is worth noting that the initiative implies the use of frequencies below 900
MHz is quite a tidbit for wireless service providers because
trees, walls and similar obstacles are penetrable for these signals
– unlike high frequency signals. However, it is worth making a reservation: unconditional
benefit from the use of free frequencies can only be obtained in areas with little
the number of TV stations, in large cities there are much fewer “unlicensed” bands and (if the FCC proposal is accepted) they will be enough
quickly “clog up”.

Apparently, the communications commission has thought through the technical side quite deeply
question, since it proposes to divide “range users” into two categories – the first category is the owners of personal portable devices
connection with reduced energy consumption, the second – telecom operators with fixed
stations. However, the FCC proposal will require, among other things, the development
technologies for determining free ranges by devices – to avoid interference
signals. So, from the looks of it, the FCC will have to produce
evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed solution and listening to the views of various parties,
before making the final decision on the use of free frequencies.
More information about the proposals made can be found on the website of the commission.
