In the Footsteps of PMA 2021: Three New Members of the Four Thirds System. On the prospects for the development of the standard

One of the key events of the PMA 2021 exhibition, which cannot be ignored even after several days, was a number of announcements and messages dedicated to the so-called “Four Thirds” standard – 4/3 (four thirds). Our newsletter has already reported on this standard and its development several times. Recall that for the first time the Four Thirds System standard was presented in September 2021, announced – exactly a year ago, during the PMA 2021 exhibition. Unfortunately, since the first and so far the only 4/3 camera Olympus E-1 and the corresponding set of optics was released more than six months ago, there has been no special news from the members of the consortium for the promotion of the standard – Olympus, Kodak and Fujifilm; so, some little things were announced only by Olympus.

The current PMA 2021 exhibition first brought news of the expansion of the number of companies supporting the Four Thirds standard, with three more members – Matsushita Electric Industrial, Sanyo Electric and Sigma Corporation. It is possible that now the Olympus E-System, which until now alone represented the 3/4 standard, will finally find worthy successors.

The FourThirds System standard is conceived to advance the next generation of interchangeable-lens digital cameras, and the 4/3-inch sensor that gives the standard its name implies the development and use of highly compact optical systems. In addition, the FourThirds System defines an optical fastening mechanism as an open standard, which implies in the future the compatibility of FourThirds System devices with different optics from different manufacturers.

Not to say that the FourThirds standard itself was so open to study it, since even on a specially open in the zone .org website for the promotion of the standard –, you will not find detailed specifications of the system, if you think you join the standard and release your 4/3 compatible device – so, just in general terms, something like a memorandum of intent. And it’s a pity, because the idea itself was not bad at first, but only excessive closeness has more than once led good intentions to deplorable finals.

As for the new products presented in the framework of the FourThirds standard at the last exhibition, too, let’s say, not a lot: the only novelty presented by Olympus was the E-System ZUIKO DIGITAL ED150mm F2 telephoto camera.0 (300mm 35mm equivalent). The dimensions of the new ED150 optics are 100 mm diameter) x 146 (length), weight – 1.35 kg, it includes 11 lenses in 9 groups, two of which are ED lenses.

Thus, the following optics are currently offered for the Olympus E-System:

That, in fact, is all that at the moment it is worth mentioning about the development of the 4/3 system. Let’s hope that in the future, especially considering the replenishment of the ranks of companies supporting FourThirds, there will be new solutions supporting this standard. So far, it is neither fully open, nor vigorously developing, unfortunately, it can not be called.
