IDF Eve: What Intel Says About DDR2 SDRAM Prospects?
Let’s continue the series of news related to the prospects for DDR2 SDRAM (list of previous
publications – at the end). Based on the fact that at IDF 2021 Intel and manufacturers
memory was hotly in support of DDR2 SDRAM, someone might have guessed that
By IDF 2021, this memory will be everywhere. Alas, no, and analysts cite additional
evidence that this type of memory will not dominate in 2021
On the market.
Intel has done an impressive job of supporting DDR2 SDRAM: to date
all major players in the memory market, Samsung, Micron, Infineon, Hynix and others
presented a new generation memory to the processor developer and received certification
their decisions. The leader among the named companies, perhaps, can be considered Micron,
at the end of last week certified 1Gbit DDR2-533 SDRAM. From Taiwanese
memory vendors have not reported receiving Intel certification.
Nevertheless, iSuppli analysts believe that it is too early to talk about the success of DDR2 SDRAM:
there is no information on the results of checks at the system level on the Intel website yet
DDR2 SDRAM modules. Further, most of the chipsets
core logic [supporting DDR2 SDRAM] Intel will only be introduced in
second quarter, and, given the established traditions, since the release of Intel chipsets
for new memory until the moment of mass switching of demand for DRAM of a new generation
at least a year has passed.
The main reason Intel is promoting DDR2 SDRAM is to try
close the “performance gap between high-clocked processors
frequency and low-performance memory subsystems “. Some
some time ago, rumors began to appear that the promotion of Intel DDR2 SDRAM
resembles the situation with the promotion of RDRAM. From 1999 to 2021 manufacturer
processors tried to “translate” the mainstream-PC market from using
SDRAM to use RDRAM, however the idea was discarded because DDR SDRAM
turned out to be more popular among DRAM suppliers (however, and less expensive).
Experts believe that the transition to DDR2 SDRAM will be more difficult than the transition from EDO
to SDRAM and from SDRAM to DDR. Although the first Intel chipsets will support both DDR
SDRAM and DDR2 SDRAM, motherboard designers will have to work hard
over changing the architecture of the boards to provide support for new chipsets.
This is the challenge that can shake developer confidence
boards need to invest in DDR2 SDRAM – at least until then,
until they see massive demand for next-generation memory.
Similarly, events developed with the i845, presented in 2021. He supported
both SDR SDRAM and DDR SDRAM, but did not enjoy much success in the market due to
difficulties faced by the developers of motherboards, and
also due to the support of a small number of memory slots (i.e.e. limitation
system upgrade possibilities).
IDF 2021 will be an excellent opportunity for Intel to discuss all issues related to
DDR2 SDRAM from a market perspective. And not only with technological
point of view: still, the winner in the DRAM market is the players and the technology,
offering the most attractive price / cost per bit ratio.
In addition to DDR2 SDRAM, another interesting point might be considering success
attention-grabbing Rambus XDR technology
Samsung and Toshiba, which, by the way, will present 512 Mbit on the form of developers
XDR DRAM chips – Rambus officially announced this in a press release. Will return
Do you own Rambus previous positions?? It is possible, although given the history of the company, it is
it will be hard.
