Mitsubishi Electric unveils double-sided LCD prototype
presented a prototype of an LCD screen, the image on which is visible from both sides.
It was originally designed for clamshell cell phones,
which would make such phones thinner and lighter. Roughly speaking, used
today in “clamshell” screens (main and auxiliary)
have the same device: an LCD panel and a backlight module that projects light
and thereby allowing you to see the image on the screen.
Physically, the displays are located at the same level, but the image on each
of them can only be seen from one side: see the image from the back
side does not allow the backlight module itself. Mitsubishi uses
a regular LCD panel and a redesigned backlight module, so the “sandwich” (screen-backlight-backlight-screen for regular phones) consists of three layers:
backlight module-panel-backlight module. The thing is that the backlight module layer
in the solution – transparent, which allows you to see the image from both sides.
Mitsubishi Electric has developed two types of “reversing” screen, which were presented at the company’s research center in Japan.
The first type screen allows you to see the same image from both sides
LCD panels, respectively, the text, “readable” on the one hand, absolutely
“unreadable” on the other. In the second screen, this problem is solved – for
by quickly changing the image on the display and synchronizing with each of the modules
backlights at a speed of 120 times per minute. Thus, the image is not “inverted” and is projected onto each side of the panel 60 times per second.
The development of first generation displays using this technology are suitable
towards the end and now the company starts looking for customers. Beyond cell phones
such screens are supposed to be used in various portable devices,
