DARPA develops 10GHz DSP

According to a source citing Ace?s Hardware, in the bowels of the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a microprocessor is being developed, the clock frequency of which will reach 10 GHz. More precisely, a digital signal processor (DSP), and, as you know, the highest achieved clock frequency for such devices is still in the region of 1 GHz (TI).

According to Ace?s Hardware, the DARPA signal processor will be built on TFAST Phase II transistors based on indium phosphide (InP), capable of operating at frequencies up to 250 GHz, which, when 20,000 transistors are integrated into one chip, makes it possible to talk about frequencies of 10 GHz. In this regard, the author questions Intel’s ability to deliver on its promise to introduce a 10-GHz silicon-based microprocessor containing millions of transistors.

Well, in our opinion, a simple comparison of DSP architectures and Intel processors is hardly appropriate in this case – as mentioned above, although the clock speeds of PC processors have already exceeded the 3 GHz mark, DSPs have just reached the 1 GHz mark. Although the skepticism of the author of the article is quite understandable, the question is much more interesting whether DARPA will be able to create such a miracle, and whether it will ever be used for peaceful purposes.
